2007 High School State Tennis Championships Announced
October 12-13, 2007
FTA is delighted to announce the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Board of Directors voted on Monday, April 30th to authorize the first ever State Tennis Championships starting this fall. This is a momentous day for tennis in Alaska!
Until now, the high school tennis season has ended with an invitational tournament hosted by Anchorage. One of the criteria for a state tournament—having participating schools in four different regions of the state—was satisfied when Kodiak High School (Region 3) sanctioned Tennis as a high school sport last year. A committee of representatives from all four regions started working a year ago with ASAA staff to develop the specifics for a state tournament.
The tennis bylaws will permit all schools with tennis programs (presently 16) to send one team of 4 girls and 4 boys to the state tournament where competition will be held in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Schools will be able to send less than a complete team so small schools will not be penalized for not fielding all (8) slots.
The Anchorage Alaska Clubs North and East will be the host for the 2007 State Tournament on October 12-13, 2007. Following this inaugural event, ASAA will review the tournament and decide if other sites qualify to host the championship.
For more information on tennis specifics, you may contact Gwen Ramras, High School Tennis Coordinator for Region VI (gwen@gci.net) who served on the tennis committee that developed the proposal. See also the News-Miner article about the ASAA meeting for more details.
Practice for the 2008 season begins Monday, July 28th. Plan to attend!
