Hutchison nets tennis triumph

FAIRBANKS — The Hutchison Hawks won three of the four matches that were played en route to 6-1 high school tennis victory over the Eielson Ravens on Friday night.
Eielson’s only point came in the most exciting match of the night as Amanda Williams outlasted Hutchison’s Kayla Robertson in a 2-hour, 15-minute slugfest. Robertson won the first set 6-3, but Williams came back to claim the second 6-4 and then won the tie-breaker 7-5.
Hutchison’s Kelsey Peterson won the No. 1 girls singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Amber Harger.
In the No. 2 boys singles event, Hutchison’s Mike Walker edged Thomas Baldwin 6-2, 4-6, 7-4. Danny Powers and Miranda Jenkins downed Taylor Jacobs and Kystal Madison 6-0, 6-1 to give the Hawks a win in the mixed doubles event.
Hutchison took forfeit wins in the boys No. 1 singles and the boys and girls doubles matches.
The Hawks are scheduled to play the West Valley Wolfpack at 3:15 p.m. Monday at The Alaska Club.
ACS Invitational
A quartet of North Pole runners earned top 10 finishes in the Anchorage Christian School Invitational cross country race on Friday in Anchorage.
Junior Christi Schmitz led the way for the Patriots with a runner-up finish in the girls junior/senior race with a time of 11 minutes, 47.49 seconds. Junior Ivy O’Guinn of Skyview won the race in 11:42.42. North Pole’s Rita Spann finished ninth in the event with a time of 13:10.3.
Junior Josh Ray led the North Pole boys in the junior/senior race, placing ninth in 10:41.28. Grace Christian’s Leif Karlberg won in 10:03.22.
Sophomore Gavin DeWilde took eighth in the boys freshman/sophomore race in 11:01.7. Elma’s Todd Jackson was the winner in 10:18.29.
North Pole freshman Kelly Schmitz was the top Interior finisher in the girls freshman/sophomore race, taking 11th in 13:30.04.
