Lathrop's Zach Fitzgerald follows through on a return during his singles match against Hutchison's Chris Poole on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the Athletic Club. Fitzgerald defeated Poole in a tie breaker.

FAIRBANKS — In his first singles match of the season, Lathrop’s Zach Fitzgerald didn’t just give Hutchison standout Chris Poole a run for his money, he took the loot.

Fitzgerald took the opening set 6-4, but Poole responded with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Fitzgerald claimed the No. 1 boys singles match with a 7-3 tiebreaker triumph. He wasn’t alone in doing that. Two other matches were decided by tiebreakers that ended 7-3.

Though there were several tight matches, the meet as a whole wasn’t as close. Lathrop cruised to a 6-1 victory over Hutchison on Thursday afternoon at The Alaska Club South.

Fitzgerald’s younger brother Kade won 6-1, 3-6, 7-3 over the Hawks’ Nick Raugust in boys No. 2 singles.

Joining the 7-3 tiebreaker club was Hutchison’s Kayla Robertson, who scored her team’s only point with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-3 win over Annelise Bachelder in No. 2 girls singles.

Lathrop’s Drew Lanning and Max Hesser-Knoll defeated Mike Walker and Nico Wehner 6-0, 6-0 in boys doubles. The Malemutes’ Mackenzie Calvillo defeated Kelsey Peterson 6-4, 6-3 in girls No. 1 singles.

In mixed doubles, Lathrop’s Tyler Loud and Amanda Lien took down Hutchison’s Dan Powers and Allie Parra, 6-3, 6-2.

Rams defeat Ravens

Unable to play in four events, a shorthanded Eielson tennis team fell 5-1 to Monroe Catholic.

The Ravens opened Thursday evening’s meet behind as the team wasn’t able take part in boys No.1 singles, boys doubles and mixed doubles.

The Rams, meanwhile, forfeited girls No. 2 singles and neither team could field a girls doubles squad.

Of the three matches played, Monroe took two.

In girls doubles, the Rams’ Christin Davis and Kelsea Hewitt took down Amanda Williams and Krystal Madison 6-2, 6-4. Dan Bunten of Monroe defeated Thomas Baldwin 6-4, 6-2 in boys No. 2 singles.

Amber Harger got Eielson’s only point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 girls over Megan James.
