Wolfpack netters strike back against Hutchison

FAIRBANKS — The West Valley High School tennis team got its revenge on Friday afternoon.
After losing to Hutchison 4-3 earlier this season, West Valley came back with a strong performance in posting a 5-2 victory at The Alaska Club South.
“We came out fired up and worked hard,” West Valley coach Debbie Miller said.
West Valley swept all three doubles matches to secure the win. Aurora Roth and Jenna Powers posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alli Parra and Kayla Robertson in the girls match, Forest Owen and Logan Little notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mike Walker and Nick Raugust in the boys match, and Lee Edwards and Amanda Holyfield captured a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Dan Powers and Rachel Wright in the mixed event.
Hutchison’s Chris Poole won the boys No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-2 against Joe Sample, while West Valley’s Ken Sample took the No. 2 match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kolby Kelsey.
Kelsey Peterson picked up Hutch’s second point in the girls No. 1 singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Loni Ellsworth. Caitlin Deutsch of West Valley earned the No. 2 singles victory against Rachel McDougall, 6-1, 6-0.
Miller said all of the players in the Mid Alaska Conference have benefited from tough competition this season.
“It’s been good for the kids, and it’s helped them grow as players,” Miller said.
West Valley winds up the regular season hosting Lathrop at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Dan Ramras Community Tennis Courts.

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears took out their frustration on the Lathrop Malemutes Friday night by posting a 69-0 victory over the Lathrop Malemutes.
The Crimson Bears ended a four-game losing streak, while improving to 3-2 in the Railbelt Conference and 3-4 overall. Lathrop’s losing streak was extended to six straight games. Other details from he game were not available Friday evening.
The Barrow Whalers suffered their first loss of the 2008 season when they came up on the short end off a 40-30 score at Nikiski. Barrow, Nikiski and Eielson all have 4-1 records in the Greatland Conference. Eielson concludes league play against Seward at noon today at Buck Nystrom Field on Eielson Air Force Base. Barrow and Nikiski finish league play next week.
In other games Friday night, the Wasilla Warriors posted a 42-7 non-conference win over the Houston Hawks, and the South Anchorage Wolverines remained unbeaten with a 63-7 Cook Inlet Conference win over the Eagle River Wolves.
