FAIRBANKS — The Lathrop Malemutes and West Valley Wolfpack captured Mid Alaska Conference high school tennis victories on Monday at The Alaska Club.
The Malemutes swept all three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over the Hutchison Hawks. The Wolfpack cruised to a 7-0 triumph over the North Pole Patriots.
Hutchison won both of the singles matches that were played on Monday, but had to forfeit the other two, and Lathrop put the match away by winning all three doubles matches.
Zach Fitzgerald and Drew Lanning posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hutch’s Nick Raugust and Nico Wehner in the boys match. Becca Gryder and Mackenzie Calvillo gave the Malemutes a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rachel Wright and Rachael McDougall in the girls match.
The mixed doubles match went to Lathrop’s Max Hesser-Knoll and Anya Garrett, with a 6-1, 6-5 triumph over Dan Powers and Kayla Robertson.
Chris Poole and Kelsey Peterson picked up singles wins for the Hawks.
Poole downed Tyler Loud by a 6-2, 6-1 margin, and Peterson notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Annelise Bachelder.
Lathrop’s Kade Fitzgerald and Jessa Boertje picked up forfeit wins in the No. 2 singles matches.
West Valley coach Debbie Miller introduced a couple of players to their first varsity matches, and it worked out well for the Wolfpack.
Sean Markle posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over North Pole’s Thomas Lenahan. Yu-Wei Chang saw his first action on the top team in the mixed doubles match where he teamed up with Jenna Powers to post a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mason Schoemaker and Laurie Geyer.
“That was a really great match for them,” Miller said. “Everyone is doing well, and it’s fun to watch them grow into the varsity level.”
West Valley swept the singles matches as Caitlin Deutsch notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Amelia Segler and Loni Ellsworth grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Katie Callahan.
Aurora Roth and Teresa Larry won the girls doubles match, 6-4, 6-1 over Victoria Martinez and Kayla Arthofer.
West Valley also benefited from forfeit wins in the boys No. 1 singles and boys doubles matches. Ken Sample was credited with a win in the No. 1 singles match and Forest Owen and Logan Little earned a point in the doubles match.
The Patriots return to action against the Eielson Ravens in a 5 p.m. match tonight at North Pole High School.
