FAIRBANKS — The North Pole Patriots pulled out a 4-3 win over the Monroe Catholic Rams despite only one official match taking place during Wednesday’s Mid Alaska Conference tennis dual meet at the Dan Ramras Community Courts.
“They’re overloaded with girls and we’re overloaded with boys, and it wasn’t pretty,” Monroe head coach Bobby Trujillo said by phone. The Rams’ Eric Ringstad captured a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ryan Smith in the No. 1 boys singles match.
“Eric had a strong serve and he’s developing his game pretty well,” Trujillo said of the Monroe junior. “Ryan played pretty well, and Eric is a force to be reckoned with here in Fairbanks.”
The Patriots won by forfeit in all the girls matches — Laurie Geyer at No. 1 singles, Joleen Boyd at No. 2 singles and Victoria Martinez and Brenna Schaake in doubles — and in mixed doubles (Adam Wurster and Amelia Segler). No. 2 singles player Dan Bunten and doubles partners Jim Winfree and Dominick Mariutto gained Monroe’s other points with wins by forfeit.
“There’s no way you’re going to win a match with no girls on the team,” said Trujillo, whose team slipped to 0-4.Trujillo said he has spread the word at Monroe Catholic that girls players are needed but none have yet come to practice.
Monroe athletic director Frank Ostanik told Trujillo about two girls who didn’t make the Rams varsity volleyball team.
“I don’t know if they want to play tennis or do not have an interest it,” Trujillo said. “From my understanding, they played in their freshmen year.”
Robin Lockwood rallied Wednesday for a 6-2, 6-5 (7-2) victory over Sarah Patterson in the girls No. 2 singles, keeping the West Valley Wolfpack unbeaten this season with a 7-0 sweep of the Eielson Ravens at the Alaska Club South.
Kelly Ranchoff topped Ben Aman 6-0, 6-2 in boys No. 1 singles and Sean Markle won 6-0, 6-0 over Taylor Jacobs in the No. 2 duel. Caitlin Deutsch collected a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Reilly Swammy in the girls No. 1 singles match.
The 4-0 Wolfpack earned their three other points by forfeits — Logan Little and Eric Jorgenson in boys doubles, Loni Ellsworth and Eric Jorgenson in girls doubles and Joe Sample and Erika Martin in mixed doubles.
