Players representing the Fairbanks Tennis Association captured four titles at the Alaska Cup Tournament on Sunday in Anchorage.
Eric Ringstad earned the boys 18-and-under singles title and teamed up with a player from Anchorage to claim the boys 18U doubles crown.
Jessa Boertje led a Fairbanks sweep of the top three positions in the girls 18U division, while Caitlin Deutsch and Loni Ellsworth teamed up to take the girls 18U doubles crown.
“It was a great experience for these kids to play against the competition in Anchorage,” Fairbanks Tennis Association coach Milo Griffin said. “Last year, we didn’t do very well down here, but this year the kids came through against some tough competition in Anchorage.”
Ringstad was matched up against Randolph Burgharg in the 16U and 18U championship matches. Burgharg earned the 16U crown with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2), but Ringstad got his revenge in the 18U title match with 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Ringstad also teamed up with an Anchorge player in the 18U boys doubles event, capturing the crown with a win over Fairbanks players Zach Fitzgerald and Tyler Loud.
Loud reached the 16U and 18U singles semifinals but lost to Burgharg each time.
Jared Lees finished second in the boys 14U singles competition.
Boertje took the top spot in the girls 18U round-robin singles event, with Deutsch taking second place and Ellsworth finishing third.
The Fairbanks contingent returned home Sunday evening, and players will join their respective high school teams today in preparation for the upcoming Mid Alaska Conference season.
The first official matches of the season are slated for Aug. 24 when Monroe Catholic is at West Valley, Hutchison is at Eielson and Lathrop is at North Pole.
Prior to that, there will be scrimmages among the MAC teams from Aug. 10-14, and scrimmages against Juneau-Douglas on Aug 21-22.
