FAIRBANKS — Deb Fitzgerald was a double winner at last weekend’s Midnight Sun Tennis Tournament at the Dan Ramras Community Tennis Courts.
Fitzgerald topped Risse Roy 6-4, 6-2 in women’s 2.5 singles and teamed with Linda English to defeat Joan Franz and Renta Wackenbauer 6-2, 6-0 in women’s 6.0 doubles.
In mixed doubles, Patty and Jerry Jones of Bradenton, Fla., joined forces to beat Gwen and Dan Ramras, 6-1, 6-3.
The closest final match of the tournament had Colleen Hawes of Vancouver, British Columbia and Patricia Boertje teaming up to edge Gwen Ramras and Connie Olson 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 (super-tiebreaker) in women's doubles.
In men’s doubles, Mike Leonard and Mitch Roth defeated Dan Holleman and Rich Kedrowski, 6-4, 6-2.
Jason Ringstad handled Joshua Jones, 6-1, 6-3, in the men’s open division. Ringstad’s younger brother, Eric, beat Chris Poole 6-2, 6-3 in the junior Under-18 final.
In junior Under-16, Kade Fitzgerald knocked out Jared Lees 6-3, 6-2.
The junior Under-14 final had Terrel Lemay eliminating Dana Lemay, 6-4, 6-4.
Tournament director Lou Gross said having out-of-towners and novices take part was a highlight.
“We had a good core group of beginning women who participated, and I think that’s a good sign for the long-term future of the tennis community,” Gross said.
